Larry Akey first connected with Buddhism in the 1970s when Trungpa Rinpoche was teaching near his childhood home in Colorado. Inspired by his grandfather, a university professor, he has a deep connection with scholarship and study of Buddhist texts. Before discovering Tsoknyi Rinpoche and Tibetan Buddhism, Larry practiced with Soka Gakkai, the Insight Meditation Community of Washington and Shambhala. Although Larry has studied and practiced primarily with Tsoknyi Rinpoche, he has also received teachings and empowerments from a number of other teachers, including Dzigar Kongtrul Rinpoche, Garchen Rinpoche, Lama Alan Wallace and Acharya Malcolm Smith. Larry leads the meditation component of Heartwood. He has had extensive retreat time.

I am a 2007 graduate of Hired Hands University, in Chicago. Since then, i’ve spent several years working in Chicagoland, Florida and now my home base, Chicago. As a massage therapist, I am able to provide my clients with a therapeutic touch, getting into that unwanted stress and tension, and at the same time, providing them with a deep sense of relaxation. In my decade of work, i’ve spend a lot of time working with people who suffer from chronic pain in their neck and shoulders from sitting for long periods of time. Here at Heartwood, I provide Swedish, Deep Tissue, a combination of both, and Prenatal massage, based on what the clients’ body is calling for that day. Everyone is different so I create a massage specifically for the person that I am working with.

I have been a Physical Therapist since 1997. I started in the Resurrection Hospital System, worked outpatient for the Rehab Institute of Chicago for 9 years, and dabbled in four different private practice settings. In 2000, I took my first John F. Barnes’ Myofascial Release seminar and had a profound experience receiving and learning this work. My passion is treating my clients utilizing this whole body technique. In 2007, I started my own PT and Myofascial Release practice.
Fascia, our connective tissue, is a three dimensional web from head to toe, surrounding our nerves, blood vessels, muscles, and organs all the way down to the cellular level. We can develop restrictions in our fascial system due to falls, repetitive movements, car accidents, surgeries, trauma, or long held emotions. Fascial tightness can exert up to 10,000 lbs per square inch on pain sensitive structures. JFB Myofascial Release® is unique in that utilizes a sustained stretch, traction, or compression into the musculoskeletal system, waiting 5 minutes or longer and giving the body time to let go and release.
My PT and Myofascial background give me a great combination for treating chronic neck and back pain, shoulder/hip/knee/ankle pain, headaches, pelvic pain, decreased flexibility, radiculopathies, scoliosis, frozen shoulder, rotator cuff injuries, gait problems, ITB pain, TMJ pain and more. My experiences and training are varied such that I can support someone having an emotional release on the table and taking some weight off their heart or provide the hands on work needed to bring someone’s knee flexion back to full range so that they can climb the stairs. Treatment is catered to your unique needs. I will analyze your gait, posture, range of motion and your tissue mobility.
I am committed to not only repeating courses in order to learn at a deeper level but also receiving my own treatment from an JFB MFR® therapist to continue to peel back my own layers and restrictions. Learning through receiving the work and feeling it in my own body helps me to take my clients to a deeper level. You will feel well cared for here on my table.

I have been licensed in massage therapy since 2003 and soon thereafter began my calling to do CranioSacral therapy which I have been pursuing since 2004. I have helped many people using a multi-modality treatment to alleviate pain, align the body, foster health, peace and well -being and bring the mind and body into balance and equilibrium. The treatments I give, currently utilize my skills and experience in various techniques such as CranioSacral Therapy, Myofascial Release and SomatoEmotional Release. The seemingly light touch of CranioSacral therapy is what magically allows for deep release and alignment on the body’s terms, hence the efficacy of the treatments which can be significantly felt. Sometimes a bit heavier touch is applied to follow the tissues to release. Dialogue can also be used at times to process emotions that are causing physical constrictions.
Wake up to a new world with the healing touch of CranioSacral Therapy!
CranioSacral Therapy for women only.

Are you constantly comparing yourself to others around you? Not feeling good enough, smart enough, attractive enough? Do you find yourself frequently frustrated about where you are in your life? I work with clients who are feeling stuck, anxious, and are tired of living on a hamster wheel of habits that no longer feel authentic to the person they want to become. I recognize that sharing and processing life events can be incredibly challenging and vulnerable. I show up for you, helping you develop skills to navigate difficult and necessary conversations. In session you can expect a dash of humor, a sprinkle of healthy confrontation, and a whole lot of navigating uncomfortable feelings. We’ll start by creating a plan based around your primary concerns, and identify everyday problems that have you feeling stuck and unsatisfied. Together, we can explore how to develop narratives and utilize tools to help you shift and reach your goals.
I specialize in working with individuals struggling to manage feelings of “not enoughness”, chronic illness, work/life balance, self-esteem, anxiety, and dysfunctional relationships. I am passionate about helping you pivot. It’s OKAY to want to step out of old patterns that have you experiencing unsatisfying outcomes. Together, we can work to acknowledge the pain and discomfort without becoming it.

Tai Chi has transformed my life. I spent my first year seated in a chair, doing Tai Chi moves as best as I could. Very slowly I learned to walk again through the practice of the slow, deliberate walk that Tai Chi teaches.
In my published book, Walking on Pins and Needles: A Memoir of Chronic Resilience in the Face of Multiple Sclerosis, I tell my dramatic personal story of experiencing years of debilitating symptoms as I ascended the corporate ladder, landed on my couch for two years, then moved through a zig-zag path to find comfort and healing through Chinese medicine and Tai Chi.
Tai Chi was my guide in managing pain, increasing overall balance, strength and learning how to relax. Through the practice I discovered my calling and have been teaching Tai Chi for over 20 years.
I teach my students what continues to be life-enhancing for me: Tai Chi is not about trying harder; it’s about letting go, being in the moment, feeling balance and the fluidity of energy.

I am the founder and director of Heartwood Center for Body Mind Spirit and founder of the Heartwood Cancer Program. My vision, more than 20 years ago, was to create a refuge and sanctuary where people of all walks of life could come together in community to learn and grow and heal. I have been practicing Asian Medicine for nearly 30 years and bring experience with both acupuncture and energy healing as well as mindfulness meditation. Treatment sessions include time for the patient to speak about what is causing their suffering and allowing the treatment strategy to arise organically. A session includes bodywork for relaxation, acupuncture to delve deeper into clearing and balancing the channels and guided meditation to soothe and settle the mind consciousness. I am trained in Tibetan, Japanese and Chinese Medicine and seamlessly weave these beautiful modalities together to provide a path out of the suffering that comes with being human. I have always been interested in health and fitness. I enjoy running, fitness training, paddle boarding and many outdoor activities. I’ve always benefited from receiving bodywork and massages. After I received my first Thai Massage, I decided I wanted to share that style of bodywork with others. I’ve been practicing Thai massage since 2011, and in 2019 I started practicing Shiatsu which is Japanese Bodywork with an influence of Traditional Chinese Medicine.
Both are Asian forms of bodywork that moves energy throughout the body. Thai Massage and Shiatsu complement each other. Thai massage is a passive yoga, deep tissue massage while Shiatsu has a softer touch using pressure along the meridians. Thai Bodywork and Shiatsu help the receiver release unwanted energetic feelings that no longer serve them and cultivates emotions that support physical and mental health.
I hope to see you soon.

Several years ago I became severely ill and awakened to the fact that I needed a new path in life. This new path led me to a better understanding of the mind/body connection and energy imbalances. Using the knowledge I have obtained about the connections between the chakras, meridians and emotions, I can work with you to self-heal from grief and other painful emotions and memories. I offer a safe place to talk about what is troubling you and then work with Reiki and other modalities to balance your energy. If this speaks to you, please call me.

Over 25 years ago, my first shiatsu session began a life long journey of self-discovery and delving into the holistic wisdom of Asian medicine modalities. I love that this form of bodywork takes into account the entire person; body, mind and spirit. As a Zen Shiatsu Practitioner, I have witnessed the healing power of shiatsu in assisting my clients to navigate the seasons and transitions of life with more strength and resilience. Whether the focus of our sessions is of a physical or emotional nature, shiatsu supports the body’s wise and innate healing capacity, clearing the path for optimal well-being and engaging in life more fully.
Shiatsu is a form of Asian bodywork that supports health and well-being by balancing the energy of the body with gentle pressure and stretching. The client wears comfortable clothing that allows for stretching and ease of movement. Each session is tailored to the client’s individual needs. I incorporate shiatsu, massage, energy work, meditation, qigong, taichi and 5 element theory.

My 1st massage was deeply transformative and it inspired me to change my career. I became aware of the healing power of touch. Not long after that unforgettable experience, in 2003, I graduated from The Chicago School of Massage Therapy. I also studied energy medicine modalities over a period of 16 years. Currently I am a student of The German New Medicine.
My sessions weave a unique blend of Intuitive Massage and Vibrational Therapy. They empower the client’s inherent abilities for healing and revelation. In presence, restrictive patterns within body and mind are honored and unblocked, facilitating deep relaxation, energetic clearing and alignment, and a state of calm.
When not in session, I connect with family, the elements in nature, I meditate, practice QiGong and Yoga, dance, write, paint, take photographs, prepare healthy meals, and volunteer to help the ones in need.

Drawing on an array of ancient and contemporary energy re-balancing, clearing, coaching, and reading modalities, I have helped clients spiritually transform and find greater happiness and health since 1993.
My shamanic training in the ancient art of soul retrieval and extraction came primarily from world renowned author, shaman, and psychotherapist Sandra Ingerman, whose book Soul Retrieval; Mending the Fragmented Self, has hugely impacted the use of shamanic methods in modern life. This profound technique helps heal wounds of trauma by restoring parts of us that energetically disconnected to survive pain and suffering.
I also offer Akashic Record Readings for practical spiritual guidance. The Akashic Record, called, “The Book of Life,” in the Bible, is an energetic record of each individual’s soul over lifetimes. I have been giving Akashic Readings for over 25 years, offering very personal insights into relationships, past lives, health problems, and your soul’s purpose.

I utilize holistic care principles such as restorative energy practice, ecotherapy, cultivating genuine connections, building community and nurturing the interconnected wellness of your body and mind.
In our collaborative sessions we will work towards rediscovering and honoring your voice, breaking free from patterns that contribute to feeling overwhelmed or stuck, and unapologetically prioritizing your needs. Together, we will explore personalized strategies to support you in alchemizing your unique goals into reality.

Janet Sushinski
With over 30 years of experience as a therapist, I have dedicated my career to helping individuals, particularly teenagers, navigate life’s challenges. My work is rooted in supporting clients through a wide range of issues including relationships, mood disorders, anxiety, trauma, family addictions, adoption, and identity exploration.
As a passionate advocate for inclusivity, I founded one of the first LGBTQ support groups in the Chicagoland area, demonstrating my deep commitment to helping people embrace their true identities. I also facilitated a support group for Children of Addicts for 25+ years, which taught me invaluable lessons about resilience and the healing power of community.
In our sessions, my primary goal is to create a space where you feel safe, understood, and genuinely heard. I believe that building a strong, authentic connection is essential for effective therapy, and I am committed to being transparent and honest as we work together.

Your relationship with your child is powerful. When children feel secure and emotionally safe, they develop resilience, healthy relationships, and confidence that lasts into adulthood.
But parenting can feel overwhelming. Whether you’re dealing with child behavior problems, prenatal or postpartum anxiety, co-parenting challenges, or feeling disconnected from the parent you want to be, know that these struggles are incredibly common. You’re not alone.
As a clinical psychologist in Illinois serving Chicagoland, Evanston, and the North Shore, I specialize in family therapy and parent-child counseling. I help families work through parenting stress, attachment struggles, and early childhood development concerns – all while honoring your family’s unique cultural values and parenting beliefs.
Whether you’re expecting your first baby or parenting children ages 0-12 (or both!), I’m here to support your family’s journey.
You already have what it takes. I’ll bring my expertise to help you be the parent you want to be.

What I love most about practicing Shiatsu is the way it makes me develop myself as human being. Whether from a minor ankle injury or from years of emotional trauma, working to help people heal has brought out the depths of my own sensitivity, strength, and capacity to do good.
My second favorite thing about Shiatsu is that I get to work with the physical body! This means feeling the physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual as one thing – a life. It is a joy to help people to feel that great goodness of life in themselves!
I graduated from Vassar College with a concentration in Studio Art and a secondary focus in Biology. My Shiatsu certification was earned at Zen Shiatsu Chicago in Evanston; shortly thereafter, I completed their Post-Graduate program in Clinical Shiatsu studies. I currently study Shiatsu with my main influence and dear mentor, Grandmother WinterJade Forest.

I offer touch, presence, and care at the sacred thresholds of life. As a Zen Shiatsu therapist, I hold space for those in transition—whether softening long-held patterns, stepping into a new phase of life, or preparing to release this one.
My practice is shaped by years of studying Ashtanga yoga, Traditional Chinese Medicine, and embodied listening. I approach the body not as something to fix, but as something to be in relationship with. Together, we’ll honor the quiet places — where healing unfolds through attention, rhythm, and trust.
I studied at Zen Shiatsu Chicago in Evanston, IL where I now work as Programs Administrator. I’ve also studied at Pura Veda Gurukulam in Costa Rica.
