Marsha Smith – Artist Statement

by Marsha Smith

I’m thrilled to be a part of the vibrant Heartwood Center collective as a psychotherapist, teacher and writer. Three years ago I had the good luck to see paintings by abstract painter Janis Post. Right away I joined her painting class–Express Yourself Creatively. I’m really delighted to participate in this exhibit with other artists from this great group.

Diving into painting has been an exciting way to explore my creativity through visual art and enjoy the process —

If there’s anything that drives my painting process it’s letting my intuition and imagination lead me. I don’t plan how the abstract painting is going to look. I experiment and explore to feel new possibilities of image and energy and constellations of colors and shapes. Abstract art is meaningful because of the process where it slowly unfolds itself.

Experimenting with visual phenomena provides an enjoyable way to feel lost and then look freshly and see new possibilities. Painting intuitively is a metaphor for me of letting life unfold, looking freshly through a new lens and exploring.
