Spring Tune-Up > Spring Punishment: the truth about detox (it’s not what you’ve been told)

Detox Culture vs Actual Support

There’s a certain flavor of spring messaging that goes like this:

You’ve been bad.
Now fix yourself.
Juice harder.

And I’m just going to say it plainly… that approach is not medicine.

In Chinese medicine, spring is the season of the Liver and Gallbladder. Yes, the Liver is involved in detoxification. But it is not a garbage disposal you can shock into working better.

It’s more like a system that thrives on rhythm, nourishment, and ease of flow.

When you push it too hard, it pushes back.

Why Aggressive Cleanses Backfire (And What Actually Helps)

Extreme detoxes often:

  • weaken digestion (your foundation of energy and blood)
  • create more internal dryness and irritability
  • increase stress hormones
  • leave you more depleted than when you started

And from a Chinese medicine perspective, that depletion can slow the very processes you’re trying to support.

That said… some gentle detox support is absolutely appropriate in spring.

The key difference is this:

Not force.
Not restriction.
Not shock to the system.

Just supporting what your body is already trying to do.

Think:

  • adding in cooked greens instead of cutting everything out
  • warm lemon water instead of juice fasting
  • supporting digestion instead of bypassing it
  • creating flow, not forcing a purge

If you’ve ever done something “detoxy” and felt clearer, lighter, more like yourself… that’s your sign it was supportive, not depleting.

If you felt worse, your body was telling you it was too much.

Your Liver Is Not a Punishment Organ

Your Liver’s job is to:

  • keep Qi moving smoothly
  • regulate emotions
  • support digestion
  • nourish the blood

It does best with consistency, not intensity.

Which means the real spring medicine is actually… pretty simple.

Gentle Ways to Support Your System

Food

  • warm, cooked meals
  • lightly sautéed greens
  • simple soups and broths
  • a little sour flavor (lemon, vinegar) to gently move Liver Qi

Movement

  • a short walk after meals
  • stretching, twisting, gentle Qigong
  • not punishing workouts, just regular movement

Daily Rhythm

  • eating at consistent times
  • not skipping meals
  • going to bed before your second wind hits

This is how you create flow.

For My Fertility + Prenatal Patients

This part really matters.

Because “detox” messaging gets especially loud around fertility… and often at exactly the wrong time.

If you are trying to conceive, preparing for IVF/IUI, or already pregnant, your body is not asking to be cleared out.

It is asking to be built up, regulated, and supported.

In Chinese medicine, fertility depends on:

  • strong digestion
  • sufficient Blood
  • smooth, calm Qi

Aggressive cleansing can disrupt all three.

Even “preconception cleanses” can backfire if they are too extreme or depleting, especially if they:

  • restrict food too heavily
  • weaken your energy
  • create stress in the system

What actually helps:

  • warm, nourishing meals (think building, not restricting)
  • steady energy throughout the day
  • supporting digestion so nutrients can be absorbed
  • gentle movement instead of depletion
  • calming the nervous system

If there is any detox support in this phase, it should be very gentle and individualized, not something pulled off a generic plan online.

You’re not trying to become lighter.

You’re creating the conditions for life.

A Different Way to Think About Spring

Instead of:
“I need to clean myself out”

Try:
“How can I support my body so things move more easily?”

That shift alone changes everything.

Spring Tune-Up 🌱

If your body has been feeling:

  • stuck
  • tense
  • emotionally overloaded
  • hormonally off
  • or just a little out of sync

This is exactly the kind of moment acupuncture is made for.

Think of it as a reset… but one that works with your body, not against it.

A Little Reminder

You don’t need punishment.
You need support.

And your body will meet you there.
