Can energy practices keep me from taking on everyone else’s energy?

Do you find yourself awash in other’s energies? Do you resonate with the label HSP, highly sensitive person, or empathic sensitivity? Often people feel this is a life sentence or a superpower, but this pattern is actually a dysregulated energy field.

So many people feel flooded by other people’s energy and emotions. They describe themselves as easily overwhelmed in public settings, and some have sensitivities to foods or the environment. The common denominator: a lack of energy containment.

Here’s one example: Joseph called himself an empath. Everyone shared their problems with him, he felt very appreciated and validated for his listening skills, and his empathy. Until he burned out. Then what he thought of as a superpower was now taking his energy down, down down.

We worked together to regulate and contain his energy field. He found that he had to clear out his attachment to being a helper in this boundaryless, uncontained way. He realized that people felt great telling them his problems, but rarely took action to resolve them. He was a dumping ground for other people’s emotional burdens, not a wise sage or a helping hand! He claimed and owned his energy, shifted his patterning, and ceased being awash in everyone else’s energies. In short, energy regulation and containment!

What is Energy Containment?

Energy Containment refers to the ability of an individual to own, manage and regulate their energy, to hold and direct it for their well-being.

When energy containment skills are used regularly, they resolve sensitivity issues and create inner authority and autonomy. Containment is achieved through establishing an appropriate and optimal inflow and outflow of energy, and a simple practice for creating boundaries around your space.

Remember Joseph? As he diligently and regularly applied the containment skills, he no longer picked up everyone else’s emotions or experienced physical sensations similar to other people’s physical issues. He remains a compassionate listener, but he is connected to people differently — not a dumping ground for their stuff, rather a friend and interested, empowering bystander.

Energy containment is a vital first step in managing your energy. It resolves the dysregulation issue referred to as empathic sensitivity or HSP. Showing up with your energy contained allows you to engage with others more easily, with compassion, and self-responsibility.
