SUMMARY:Falling Awake: A Half Day Retreat
DESCRIPTION:This half day retreat explores how to shift from enduring to engaging to thriving. \nFalling Awake is a phrase used in Mindfulness Practices. When we pause and become accustomed to listening to our inner world\, we fall awake; we have realizations and gain clarity. Give yourself this gift: a half day to rest\, assess and explore\, meet new people\, play games and experience healing yoga. \nEndurance requires fortitude\, stamina and locking in. We’ll add focus\, attunement and flexibility. We know that intergenerational learning is vibrant. We carry embedded patterns of pain\, problem solving and avoidance. We also carry learned patterns of hope\, humor and creativity. Additionally\, we live in a time of distraction\, anxious attention and future walking. \nWe will spend our time\, in this safe Circle Up\, listening to the thoughts that are whispering and shouting; those thoughts we want to push down or\, probably\, find a like minded person. We will attend\, sift and attune to what needs action and what can change. \nIn Falling Awake\, we will spend some time tuning in to our thoughts and our capabilities. \nHope is a muscle that can be flexed as we come to a realistic assessment of what is present in our Day. We must cultivate Hope\, Discernment and Action.Bring those hopes and worries. We have space for them. We’ll do this through conversation\, games\, journaling prompts\, Yin Yoga\, and meditation. \nFacilitated by Dr. Melissa Perrin\, this retreat offers a pause to reflect\, assess and set intentions as we continue into the “next normal.” \nWear comfortable clothing\, comfy socks and bring your yoga mat. If you don’t have a mat\, we’ll provide one for you. Parking is on-site in an adjacent lot or there is residential street parking nearby. \nLight snacks and water will be provided. Please bring a lunch. \nLEARN MORE.

SUMMARY:Tuesday Sangha: Why We Meditate
DESCRIPTION:Tuesdays\, 5:30pm to 7pm. \n\n\n\n\nHeartwood’s sanghas are increasingly body-centered\, deeply curious about delving into a variety of meditative approaches while still honoring Siddhartha Gautama’s radical notion of sitting quietly until he understood suffering — and how to break free from it. Each session will open with a guided meditation\, progress to an exploration of new approaches and techniques\, dive into group practice exploring those techniques\, and end with discussion and Q&A. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWe will spend the next several months studying the practices in Why We Meditate by Tsoknyi Rinpoche and Daniel Goleman. They offer a somewhat nontraditional\, body-centered approach to calm abiding and insight meditation. Whether you’re new to meditation or a seasoned practitioner looking to freshen up your practice\, we think you will find their approach helpful. You may find it useful to acquire a copy of their text for your own personal practice.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n  \n\n\nWhile drop-ins are always welcome\, the Sangha encourages repeat visits and the keeping of a journal to track your meditation pathway. Heartwood Sangha’s Nancy Floy and Larry Akey will guide the class\, with sangha members and guest practitioners encouraged to provide new perspectives and practices. \nNo charge; donations gratefully accepted. Please contact Larry for more information at (202)580-9313.

SUMMARY:Sunday Sangha
DESCRIPTION:Sunday Sangha led by Meditation Program Director\, Nancy Floy\n10:00am – 12:00pm (via Zoom until early May 2026) \nNancy will lead us in a few simple Buddhist chants and a guided meditation. Following meditation\, we will return to our new text\, Interbeing: Fourteen Guidelines for Engaged Buddhism by Thich Nhat Hanh. “Socially-engaged Buddhism” has become something of a buzzword in among many sanghas\, but what exactly does it mean? More importantly\, how do we practice it? Thich Nhat Hanh\, a Vietnamese Zen Buddhist monk\, created these practices to help people develop the insight of the interconnected nature of reality and the human experience\, which could then lead to a collective awakening. \nContact Larry Akey\, (Lakey0752@gmail.com) for key code to enter building or further information.
