SUMMARY:Art Show: Kinesis/Pandemic Art with Elyse Fineman & Nathan Torrence
DESCRIPTION:In the Skylight Room\, July 23 through September 30\nOpening Reception: Friday\, September 9\, 7:00pm – 9:00pm\n\nKinesis:\nBased on movement\, Kinesis is an attempt to free myself from preciousness and let each painting breathe. Without any plans or sketches\, each painting is done in a single sitting. I allow something outside of myself to move me and I work non-stop until the movement has finished. \nI love every painting in the series\, but to let the work breathe I want them to have a life beyond my hands. I want my paintings to find new homes and enrich people’s lives. Like everything in nature and in life\, you will find that your painting has something different to show you every day. \nI work in the healing arts\, visual art\, and music. Through each medium I pose questions but I also offer solutions and optimism for human life. I seek to continually develop the grace of my movements and by extension the impact that my work has on the life that surrounds and penetrates me.  Each art form is also a gateway that connects me to other people\, cultures and corners of the world in a way that I could never achieve solely through socializing. I hope that my work has something of value to offer to you and yours. \nLearn more: https://www.nathantorrencearts.com \n\nPandemic Art:\nMy creative journey began with a bowl.\n \nI was visiting the Chicago Turkish Festival a number of years ago when I fell in love with the pottery of Cappadocia. A bowl inspired me to attempt to recreate its beauty and intricacy on a 3’x4′ canvas. That interest lasted a couple of days\, the canvas went into my storage room\, and life zoomed on. Fast forward 18 months to March\, 2020. COVID-19 had disrupted life as we knew it. My family was all at home for the foreseeable future\, and what could I do? Binge Netflix? Bake sourdough bread? Learn to knit? \n\nNah! “I have a giant canvas collecting dust. What else do I have around the house? Pretty paper? Paint? Gems? Let’s finish this!”\n\nAnd that is how my Pandemic Art was born. The canvas took me 3 months to complete\, but I was exhilarated with the results. I swore I would never work on anything that big again (I did)\, but I dove head first in to all kinds of other projects – whatever I was thinking about that day\, whatever I loved\, whatever inspired me.\n\nThere are now 72 pandemic pieces and counting. As long as I have ideas\, they will be made. Thank you for allowing me to share them with you.\n\nLearn more: https://www.instagram.com/e.calavera.designs/\n\nFor details about the show: https://www.facebook.com/events/1278122706264351/?ref=newsfeed

SUMMARY:Art Show + Book Launch\, featuring Tanya Sugarman
DESCRIPTION:  \n \n“The Barry Tree”\, an enchantingly told and illustrated children’s book by Tanya Sugarman\, is a rare treat for children and adults of all ages. \nThe book describes the love between a little girl and her baby brother\, who share in richly illustrated flights of fancy. Sumptuous colors and dazzling designs enhance the imaginative language. Through word and image the reader experiences tales of the two children as they pretend to be circus acrobats and daring bareback riders. \nIllness and death are introduced with the greatest tact and sensitivity. The glorious adventures are sadly curtailed as little brother’s health fails. The author is careful to tell this part of the story in a safe and reassuring manner for her young readers. Beautiful words and images help the big sister\, as well as the reader\, find the consoling power in love and memory. \nTanya Sugarman is a lifelong educator as well as a mother and grandmother. Her deep sympathy with children has inspired her writing and illustrating. “The Barry Tree” is a book that celebrates the joys of imagination and adventure\, while also guiding the reader through difficult passages of loss. \nAnne Lefkovitz\, Retired Chair\,\nSchool District 65 Drama Department Drama Specialist and Fine Arts Coordinator\, Martin Luther King\, Jr. Laboratory School Evanston\, Illinois \n

SUMMARY:Sunday Sangha
DESCRIPTION:Sunday Sangha led by Meditation Program Director\, Nancy Floy\n10:00am – 12:00pm (via Zoom until early May 2026) \nNancy will lead us in a few simple Buddhist chants and a guided meditation. Following meditation\, we will return to our new text\, Interbeing: Fourteen Guidelines for Engaged Buddhism by Thich Nhat Hanh. “Socially-engaged Buddhism” has become something of a buzzword in among many sanghas\, but what exactly does it mean? More importantly\, how do we practice it? Thich Nhat Hanh\, a Vietnamese Zen Buddhist monk\, created these practices to help people develop the insight of the interconnected nature of reality and the human experience\, which could then lead to a collective awakening. \nContact Larry Akey\, (Lakey0752@gmail.com) for key code to enter building or further information.

SUMMARY:Holding Steady in Turbulent Times: Buddhist Tools for Cultivating Equanimity
DESCRIPTION:We all face difficult situations at one point or another in life\, but we do not all respond the same. Equanimity may be one of the most critical life skills\, and one of the most undervalued. The ability to keep our head in a crisis\, to keep our balance when surrounded by upheaval and to keep our cool when tempers around us flare up—according to Buddhist understanding\, these are not qualities that some people have while others do not\, but are aptitudes that anyone can develop. Buddhist teachings offer an abundance of tools for developing this key element for flourishing as human beings. \nThe equanimity cultivated in Buddhist practices is a way of engaging actively with the messiness of life\, and is very far from turning away in indifference or with apathy. This talk will explore strategies that can be employed by anyone wanting to learn how to develop this essential life skill. \nThe talk will be delivered directly in Spanish for our Latinx community and simultaneous translation will be provided into English. Bring your headphones and make sure your phone has an FM radio app downloaded. \nTo join virtually: https://www.youtube.com/user/faceBuda \nDamcho Diana Finnegan is co-founder of Dharmadatta Community\, a Spanish-speaking intentional Buddhist community. Her PhD thesis explored gender in Buddhist narratives\, and she is working on a book on Buddhist practice centering the experience of women. She is an ally of survivors\, and is committed to working to eliminate the conditions that make abuse so common in Tibetan Buddhist communities.
