SUMMARY:Tai Chi-Level 1
DESCRIPTION:Instructor: Arlene Faulk \nThis class is for students who been active in the Beginners’ class for up to a year. Students will continue to learn the movements of the Yang Style short form by Cheng Man-ch’ing. \nArlene Faulk\n \nTai Chi has transformed my life. I spent my first year seated in a chair\, doing Tai Chi moves as best as I could. Very slowly I learned to walk again through the practice of the slow\, deliberate walk that Tai Chi teaches. \nIn my published book\, Walking on Pins and Needles: A Memoir of Chronic Resilience in the Face of Multiple Sclerosis\, I tell my dramatic  personal story of experiencing years of debilitating symptoms as I ascended the corporate ladder\, landed on my couch for two years\, then moved through a zig-zag path to find comfort and healing through Chinese medicine and Tai Chi.  \nTai Chi was my guide in managing pain\, increasing  overall balance\, strength and learning how to relax. Through the practice I discovered my calling and have been teaching Tai Chi for over 20 years. \nI teach my students what continues to be life-enhancing for me: Tai Chi is not about trying harder; it’s about letting go\, being in the moment\, feeling balance and the fluidity of energy. \n312.642.0722 | Email | Website

SUMMARY:A Body-Based Meditation Course with Rose Taylor and Ari Goldfield
DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, April 11 and Sunday\, April 12\n9:00 am—5:00 pm both days\n(Saturday and Sunday\, only) \n“We don’t need to get rid of anything; we don’t need to add anything. Simply experience directly what is actually there—this authenticity will liberate you.”\n~ the Bodhisattva Maitreya \nMahamudra is a profound and powerful meditation practice with a simple message: Our experience is flawless just as it is. We do not need to try to fix our experience\, change it\, improve it\, or get rid of it. When we let the struggle with our experience simply relax\, then our thoughts\, feelings\, and perceptions feel held and supported by gentle acceptance. Our fear and rigidity gradually dissolve\, and we taste the poignancy\, sweetness\, clarity\, and joy that the Mahamudra yogis and yoginis sing of. We become comfortable in our own skin. \nThis weekend we will explore the foundations of Mahamudra practice in a step-by-step way that develops confidence and direct experience. This will be enhanced and grounded in our bodies through training in lujong\, a series of Tibetan yogic exercises suitable for practitioners of all fitness levels. The lujong exercises help us transform stress\, anxiety\, and physical pain to develop strength\, ease\, and gentleness in our felt experience. There will be explanations\, meditation sessions\, and time for questions and discussion. \nAbout Ari Goldfield\nAri is a Buddhist teacher who had the unique experience of being continuously in the training and service of his own teacher\, the Tibetan master Khenpo Tsültrim Gyamtso Rinpoche\, for eleven years. From 1998-2006\, Ari served as Khenpo Rinpoche’s oral translator and secretary on seven round-the-world teaching tours\, received extensive instruction from Rinpoche\, and meditated under Rinpoche’s guidance in retreats. Ari is also a published translator and author of books and articles on Buddhist philosophy and meditation\, as well as numerous songs of realization. He holds a BA from Harvard College\, a JD from Harvard Law School\, and a MA in counseling psychology from the California Institute of Integral Studies. He and his wife\, Rose Taylor\, currently teach internationally from their home base in San Francisco under the auspices of Wisdom Sun\, the practice and study community they established in 2011. \nAbout Rose Taylor Goldfield\nRose\, along with her husband\, Ari Goldfield\, founded and is main teacher for the Wisdom Sun Buddhist community based in San Francisco. She is a life coach\, certified by the Coaching Training Institute (CTI) and the International Coach Federation (ICF)\, and author—her new book is Training the Wisdom Body: Buddhist Yogic Exercise. She holds an MA in Indo-Tibetan Buddhist studies from Naropa University\, and spent many years meditating and teaching in nunneries and monasteries in Nepal and Bhutan. She teaches Buddhist meditation\, philosophy\, yogic exercise and dance\, and classical Tibetan language. Rose has written and translated books\, articles\, and numerous songs of realization\, including Khenpo Rinpoche’s book Stars of Wisdom and a chapter in Freeing the Body\, Freeing the Mind: Writings on the Connection Between Yoga and Buddhism. \nRelated Articles by Rose Taylor Goldfield and Ari Goldfield \nLove Me\, Hate Me \nPraise and blame are like echoes that don’t ultimately exist\, explains Rose Taylor. But we still have to know how to work with it. \nHow to Bridge the Gap \nWhether we’re relating as lovers\, friends\, family\, or colleagues\, habitual patterns separate us from each other and the present moment. Drawing on Buddhist and Western psychology\, Rose Taylor and Ari Goldfield show us how to cut through old patterns and truly connect. \nREGISTER HERE.

SUMMARY:Core Teaching of the Buddha
DESCRIPTION:Instructor: Venerable Shaku Mui (Sensei Mui) \nAt Heartwood in the upstairs Classroom \nThe teaching of the Buddha as taught in the Pali Canon gives us instructions on how to be happier\, more at peace\, and free of the causes of emotional pain. The main focus of the Buddha’s teaching was about “suffering” and the cessation of “suffering”. \nDuring the 49 years Siddhattha Gotama (Shakyamuni Buddha) taught\, developed and addressed ideas that are today being confirmed by cognitive psychology\, neuroscience and quantum physics. \nThese ongoing workshops will pick a different theme each month; we will explore the myriad forms of human experience and dive deeply into our own personal experiences as well. In this way we can better understand the causes of our own psychological development and that of others. We will view the teaching from the Buddha’s perspective\, followed by analyzing the teachings as how they apply to us as individuals\, and conclude with a meditation. \nThe Buddha offered us 40 objects of meditation and many variations on how to meditate on them. Giving us a diverse toolbox from which to draw. \nFor more information about Ven. Mui and his programs please see his website at www.hongaku.net.

SUMMARY:Study Class IV
DESCRIPTION:Led by Tsogyaling teachers\, these ongoing classes will offer study and discussion of meditation texts and introduce contemplation and compassion practices. Students of all faiths\, philosophies and walks of life who are interested in exploring this path are welcome. Class is offered on a drop-in basis; begin any time. Classes are held in the second-floor Heartwood classroom with the exception of the Vajrasattva Feast which is held in the Skylight Event Space. \n4th Sunday\nVajrasattva Sadhana\nKnown as one of the most precious and profound Dzogchen Sadhanas within Vajrayana\, this profound Sadhana from the Ati Zabdon Terma of the great master Terdag Lingpa is filled with blessings and merit. This Sadhana contains within it the entire meaning of the profound Vajrayana path. This practice is open for authorized students only. Coordinated by Nancy Floy and Trish Mooney. For initial registration\, contact Nancy at 847.491.1122 x11 or email. \nNancy Floy\n \nI am the founder and director of Heartwood Center for Body Mind Spirit and founder of the Heartwood Cancer Program. My vision\, more than 20 years ago\, was to create a refuge and sanctuary where people of all walks of life could come together in community to learn and grow and heal.  I have been practicing Asian Medicine for nearly 30 years and bring experience with both acupuncture and energy healing as well as mindfulness meditation.  Treatment sessions include time for the patient to speak about what is causing their suffering and allowing the treatment strategy to arise organically.  A session includes bodywork for relaxation\, acupuncture to delve deeper into clearing and balancing the channels and guided meditation to soothe and settle the mind consciousness.  I am trained in Tibetan\, Japanese and Chinese Medicine and seamlessly weave these beautiful modalities together to provide a path out of the suffering that comes with being human.  To schedule a treatment session call or text:  847-491-9858 email: nancyfloy@heartwoodcenter.com\nCredentials: MA\, LAc\, Dipl Ac \n847.491.9858 | Email
