SUMMARY:Color and Kindness and Creativity\, A Group Art Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Group Art Exhibition – Heartwood Center  \nDecember 6 to April 30 \n“There is no must in art\, because art is free.” -Wassily Kandinsky \nby Janis Post\nJoin us at the opening reception on Saturday\, December 6 with a painting session offered at 3pm.   \nThis exhibition showcases the diverse creativity of individuals who’ve painted and connected as a community in the Express Yourself Creatively class and also taken our separate painting journeys. \nParticipant artists include: Janis Post\, Marsha Smith\, Martha Anderson\, Bonnie Bailiff\, Lukie Marriott\, Lauren Marquez-Viso\, Nancy Polich\, Nikko Viso\, Marsha Warren\, Ann Winschel \n— \nMarsha Smith – Artist Statement \nby Marsha Smith\nI’m thrilled to be a part of the vibrant Heartwood Center collective as a psychotherapist\, teacher and writer. Three years ago I had the good luck to see paintings by abstract painter Janis Post. Right away I joined her painting class–Express Yourself Creatively. I’m really delighted to participate in this exhibit with other artists from this great group. \nDiving into painting has been an exciting way to explore my creativity through visual art and enjoy the process —  \nIf there’s anything that drives my painting process it’s letting my intuition and imagination lead me. I don’t plan how the abstract painting is going to look. I experiment and explore to feel new possibilities of image and energy and constellations of colors and shapes. Abstract art is meaningful because of the process where it slowly unfolds itself.   \nExperimenting with visual phenomena provides an enjoyable way to feel lost and then look freshly and see new possibilities. Painting intuitively is a metaphor for me of letting life unfold\, looking freshly through a new lens and exploring.

SUMMARY:Sunday Sangha
DESCRIPTION:Sunday Sangha led by Meditation Program Director\, Nancy Floy\n10:00am – 12:00pm (via Zoom until early May 2026) \nNancy will lead us in a few simple Buddhist chants and a guided meditation. Following meditation\, we will return to our new text\, Interbeing: Fourteen Guidelines for Engaged Buddhism by Thich Nhat Hanh. “Socially-engaged Buddhism” has become something of a buzzword in among many sanghas\, but what exactly does it mean? More importantly\, how do we practice it? Thich Nhat Hanh\, a Vietnamese Zen Buddhist monk\, created these practices to help people develop the insight of the interconnected nature of reality and the human experience\, which could then lead to a collective awakening. \nContact Larry Akey\, (Lakey0752@gmail.com) for key code to enter building or further information.

SUMMARY:Tuesday Sangha: Why We Meditate
DESCRIPTION:Tuesdays\, 5:30pm to 7pm. \n\n\n\n\nHeartwood’s sanghas are increasingly body-centered\, deeply curious about delving into a variety of meditative approaches while still honoring Siddhartha Gautama’s radical notion of sitting quietly until he understood suffering — and how to break free from it. Each session will open with a guided meditation\, progress to an exploration of new approaches and techniques\, dive into group practice exploring those techniques\, and end with discussion and Q&A. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWe will spend the next several months studying the practices in Why We Meditate by Tsoknyi Rinpoche and Daniel Goleman. They offer a somewhat nontraditional\, body-centered approach to calm abiding and insight meditation. Whether you’re new to meditation or a seasoned practitioner looking to freshen up your practice\, we think you will find their approach helpful. You may find it useful to acquire a copy of their text for your own personal practice.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n  \n\n\nWhile drop-ins are always welcome\, the Sangha encourages repeat visits and the keeping of a journal to track your meditation pathway. Heartwood Sangha’s Nancy Floy and Larry Akey will guide the class\, with sangha members and guest practitioners encouraged to provide new perspectives and practices. \nNo charge; donations gratefully accepted. Please contact Larry for more information at (202)580-9313.
