SUMMARY:Special Class: Perspectives on the Heart Sutra
DESCRIPTION:“Choela” is an honorific for a Buddhist nun. In addition to participating in our regularly scheduled classes\, Choela will offer a special class on the Heart Sutra\, one of the core texts of Mahayana Buddhism. \nSaturday\, November 5 | 1:30pm – 3pm  \nThere is little doubt that the Heart Sutra is among the most frequently used and recited texts in the entire Mahayana Buddhist tradition. Yet every time we study it\, we learn something new. Choela Tenzin Dadon will lead us on an exploration of this profound and enigmatic text for three weeks beginning Saturday\, November 5\, from 11am to 12:30pm in the shrine room. The class will also meet on November 12 and November 19. \nA Bhutanese nun\, Choela Tenzin Dadon is an accomplished scholar and a gifted teacher. After completing a traditional 13-year program in Buddhist philosophy at Jamyang Choling Institute in Dharamsala\, India\, she went on to earn two Masters degrees and a PhD from the University of Malaysia\, and has published extensively under her lay name\, Sonam Wangmo. A global leader in the effort to improve gender equity in Buddhism\, and especially the fight to obtain full ordination for Tibetan Buddhist nuns\, she was recognized as one of the outstanding women in Buddhism by the International Women’s Meditation Center. Choela is currently the Director of Education for the Vajrayana Buddhist Council of Malaysia. She is fluent in English and four other languages\, as well as several Bhutanese dialects.
