Evanston Township High SchoolOutreach Efforts Bring Mindfulness Meditation to Evanston High School, Police Department

Summer 2011: Part of Heartwood's mission is to offer our holistic health approach beyond the doors of our center and out into the community. This summer, we are delighted to be working with Evanston Township High School (ETHS) and the Evanston Police Department to share the benefits of mindfulness meditation.

Heartwood members Colleen Hubbard (energy work), Alison Oakes (psychotherapy), Laura Dorfman (writer), Nancy Floy (acupuncture) and Louise Rosenberg (massage therapist) are providing free sessions through the ETHS Dimensions of Learning Program of Evanston Township High School (ETHS) and for Evanston police officers.

Makin' It Happen in the West Village

The family fest, Makin' It Happen in the West Village, May 20-21, was great fun with dancing, fire performers and an expo to showcase all the great organizations in our community. Heartwood was delighted to participate and get to know more of our neighbors. Thanks to the Evanston West Village Business Association and everyone who worked hard to make this event so successful.

Most of you have probably heard about the terrible tragedy that occurred at the McDonalds on Dempster on April 15. Sadly there was a shooting among some young students and one boy was shot (he is currently in stable condition and recovering). The hostility started last summer between a group of kids in downtown Evanston, then happened again with this same group in our new neighborhood. Heartwood Center's Nancy Floy and Diane Testa immediately connected with our neighbors to organize a peace vigil at the intersection of Dempster and Dodge.

When Heartwood came to this community we made a committment to take our work out of our treatment rooms and classroom and bring it into our neighborhood. Many Heartwood practitioners joined in the vigil that night where we aimed to manifest the peace and harmony that our Heartwood community is known for.
